ALLEGAN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – A police chase ended with a splash Wednesday in the City of Allegan, according to Allegan County Sheriff’s Lt. Bretton Ensfield.
It started, Ensfield said in an email to media, just before 8:30 a.m., when a deputy noticed a suspicious vehicle parked along Monroe Road, just west of the City of Allegan. The deputy attempted to contact the driver, who fled the scene. The deputy pursued the car for a short distance, calling for back-up, but then terminated the chase.
Moments later the suspect’s car hit two police vehicles responding to the call for help. The suspect then drove the vehicle off a steep bank, tumbling into the Kalamazoo River, near the Allegan County Fairgrounds.
An Allegan County Sheriff’s sergeant and two Michigan State Police troopers went into the 50-degree water to rescue the suspect as the vehicle sank.
Allegan County dive-team members recovered the submerged vehicle afterwards.
Allegan firefighters and police officers assisted deputies and troopers during this incident, which remains under investigation.
