COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Branch County Administrator Bud Norman told county commissioners during their Thursday morning work session that language in the millage proposal for a new Branch County Jail has been sent to their attorneys for review. Norman said once the process is completed next month, the language will be forwarded back to commissioners so that they can vote on a resolution.
A resolution needs to be passed by May 10, 2016 so it can get on the August ballot. Informational meetings will be held before voters head to the polls but the dates have not been determined yet. Norman says some questions have already been raised by taxpayers.
It’s estimated that the construction of a new jail either on state property or on county property next to the current jail on North Marshall Road will cost around $28 million. Voters would be asked to approve the millage proposal August 2nd. It will come 10 years after Branch County voters rejected another millage proposal to build a new jail.
