COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Planning Commission approved a request from the American Moslem Society on Monday night to amend a special land use permit which would slightly modify parking lot plans for their Mosque which is under construction at 129 Perkins Street.
City Planner Jacob VanBoxel said the current residential home at 115 Perkins would remain.
For the residence 115 Perkins to be converted to a single or multi-family dwelling, it would require two parking spaces for each rental unit.
VanBoxel pointed out there have been concerns about parking around the Mosque going back to 2017.
After about a 20 minute discussion, Planning Commission member Jeff Budd motioned that the parking lot at 126 Perkins be further developed to accommodate the necessary parking.
There would be between 12 and 14 parking spaces. The final number will be determined at a later time.
The original plan for the two story Mosque was approved by the Coldwater Planning Commission back in July 2018. They approved a Special Land Use permit for the project in February of 2020, just before the first COVID-19 cases were reported in Michigan.
The ensuing COVID-19 pandemic delayed the start of work on the Islamic Center which is being built on two-and-a-quarter acres of land.
Ground was broken in December of 2021. Plans call for the nearly $3.5 million project to feature a mosque and learning center.
