BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – A handful of Branch County residents voted on millage proposals in the Reading and Colon school districts on Tuesday.
The Colon proposal which asked voters to allow the school district to continue levying the statutory rate required for the school district to receive its revenue per pupil foundation allowance passed 332-130.
Voters in Sherwood and Matteson Townships approved the proposal 58-40 and it passed in St. Joseph County 274-90.
With the proposal being adopted, the millage rate of just over 18.5 mills for ten years is renewed. It was set to expire with the 2023 tax levy.
It’s estimated the Colon school district will collect over $1-point-3 million in 2024 with the millage approval.
Meanwhile, voters in the Reading School District turned down by eight votes a request for a millage increase of 1-point-5 mills for eight years through 2030.
Eight of the nine Algansee Township voters who cast ballots said yes but that was not enough to overcome the no votes in Hillsdale County.
The final tally saw the no votes edged the yes votes 277 to 269. The tally is expected to become official when the Hillsdale County Board of Canvassers meet on Thursday.
It was estimated the Reading school district would have collect over $30,000 if the millage was approved and levied. It was to restore funds lost as a result of the reduction required by the Michigan Constitution of 1963.
