COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Branch County 911 Communications Board is scheduled to hold a special meeting of its Executive Committee next Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. to discuss less money coming from a voter approved cell phone surcharge than what was projected.
The monthly surcharge of up to $2.52 per phone device was approved by Branch County voters in November of 2020 to help fund a new 800/700 MHz Radio System which was designed to improve communications.
It was scheduled to raise about $2-point-4 million annually and would go no longer than six years starting in July of 2021.
The new radio system replaced an old system that dated back to the early 1990’s.
911 Director Bob Swick was asked about funds from the surcharge during Wednesday’s 911 Board meeting.
Board Chair Keith Baker indicated right now there are more questions than answers.
County Administrator Bud Norman was not present at Wednesday’s 911 Board meeting as he was away at a funeral.
