BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – The second of two bridge replacement projects being performed by the Branch County Road Commission this summer is scheduled to start on Monday.
Crews will be begin replacing the 55-year-old Marshall Road bridge over Hog Creek next week which will force the closing of Marshall Road just north of Girard.
The work is tentatively scheduled to be completed by the middle of October.
The Road Commission says alternate routes would be Marshall Road, east on Jonesville Road to I-69 or Girard Road, east to Dean Road, north to Herricksville Road and West to Marshall Road.
A inspection by Great Lakes Underwater Services found problems with the bridge’s steel pilings which led to the lowering of weight limits for trucks and other large vehicles in November of 2020.
The Road Commission posted signs and message boards about the weight limits on the bridge which was constructed in 1968.
Meanwhile, work on replacing the Clay Road bridge over Union Drain #2 is continuing after work started on July 5. The Clay Road work is scheduled to be finished by the end of August.
Other major projects this summer for the Road Commission included the paving of a three-and-a-half mile stretch of State Road between the I-69 bridge and Quincy-Grange Road and maintenance work on Snow Prairie Road from U.S. 12 to the Michigan-Indiana line.
