COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A man who drove through a garage door to get away from police in January of 2020 was sentenced on Monday in Branch County Circuit Court.
34-year-old Jeffery James Elliott was ordered to serve 14 months to two years in the Michigan Department of Corrections after he entered a guilty plea to assaulting, resisting or obstructing a police officer.
Elliot was given credit for 289 days already served in jail. In exchange for his guilty plea, prosecutors dismissed charges of assault with a dangerous weapon as well as a second assaulting, resisting or obstructing a police officer count.
Troopers from the Michigan State Police and the Branch County Sheriff’s Department attempted to arrest Elliot on outstanding warrants out of St. Joseph County at a Kinderhook Township residence on January 7, 2020.
Michigan State Police said at the time that Elliot resisted and obstructed law enforcement officers. They added he damaged private property when he drove through a garage door and hit a vehicle while fleeing from police.
