COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Branch County Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence Executive Director Kim Hemker says the mortgage has been paid off on the Child Advocacy Center on Michigan Avenue which is across the street from the Coalition’s Naomi Davis Shelter House.
The Child Advocacy Center moved into the building which was formally occupied by the Hope Network. It was shut down by the Hope Network in the summer of 2021. They blamed the 2019 Michigan auto insurance reform law as the reason they closed their location in Coldwater.
A real estate closing on the property took place just over a year ago. The building sold for $490,000 after it was listed for $675,000.
The mortgage was paid off thanks to numerous donations from the community. Executive Director Kim Hemker says, “The children and families we serve have been so blessed by the gifts from our community”.
It was originally planned to have the Child Advocacy Center move from Quincy to a new building next to the shelter house.
The advocacy center offers child-focused and friendly services. Trained professionals help with decisions about investigating, treating and prosecuting child abuse cases.
Before the Branch County Child Advocacy Center opened several years ago in Quincy, Branch County cases had to use the Calhoun County Advocacy Center in Battle Creek.
