COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Two Hillsdale County residents have made an offer to the City of Coldwater to buy the former Lefty’s Lounge building which has been vacant for over seven years.
City Attorney Megan Angell says in a memo for Monday’s City Council meeting that Cody Hawkes and Sydney Downey have made an offer to the City to purchase the property at 10 South Monroe Street for $32,000.
Angell says the City bought the property at the real property tax foreclosure auction in 2019 for $23,500, including back taxes, and since then has invested additional funds in it for past due real property taxes, asbestos remediation, ongoing real property tax payments, parking lot assessments, insurance and other items which brings the total investment to about $40,000.
Hawkes and Downey say they intend to open a specialty ice cream shop in the space that would serve home-made ice cream, including specialty flavors, and they hope to be able to offer a seating area at the west side of the building.
Hawkes and Downey are employed full time and they expect to limit the hours and months of operation to the summer months and daytime and early evening hours.
The sales and development agreements are scheduled to be introduced during the City Council meeting on Monday night. If introduced, the next regular meeting the sales agreement can be approved would be January 8, 2024.
