COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater B.P.U. Board of Directors gave conditional approval on Wednesday night to enter into a 10 year agreement for the sale of excess capacity with the Calhoun Intermediate School District.
The CBPU originally entered into a 10-year agreement with the CISD in 2003 to lease 12 dark fibers between Coldwater and Tekonsha in order to provide a redundant path for the utility’s internet services.
CISD is the owner, operator, and fiscal agent for an Educational Telecommunications System in Calhoun County, which includes aerial strands and fiber optic cables attached to existing utility poles within Calhoun and Branch Counties.
The contract was renewed for two to five year extensions but it did not allow for any additional renewals so a new contract had to be negotiated.
Brian Musselman from the CBPU said the new contract has the same terms as the previous agreement.
CBPU Director Paul Jakubczak said maintenance has been performed in the past.
The agreement calls for the CISD to sell the capacity of 12 fiber optic filaments, contained within the fiber optic cable, for CBPU’s exclusive use. The conditional approval was sought as the agreement is still undergoing a final legal review.
