UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – Officials with the Village of Union City say preliminary work has begun to build a pedestrian bridge that will connect Riverside and Heritage Cultural Parks over the St. Joseph River.
Engineers with Fleis and Vandenbrink are on site as they develop a site plan and engineering for the project.
In addition to the pedestrian bridge, the $850,000 project will include lighted walkways and ADA compliant access to the parks and the bridge.
According to a post on the village’s Facebook page, the project is being fully funded by the Spark Grant which is a Michigan Department of Natural Resources grant designed to create renovate and redevelop public recreation opportunities.
It’s anticipated construction will be completed in the spring or summer of 2025.
A celebration committee is currently working to host a celebration upon the completed project. More details will be announced in the coming months.
