UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – Members of the Union City Village Council expressed disappointment during their March meeting that once again the State of Michigan has decided they will not reduce the speed at the intersection of M-60 and Broadway Street on the north side of the village.
The latest request was made by the Union City Village Council and Burlington Township Board.
There have been efforts over the last 70 years to reduce the speed at the busy intersection which has seen a large number of serious injury and fatal crashes.
The intersection has seen an increase in businesses, commercial driveways and traffic in recent years.
Union City officials point out their village remains the only entity on M-60 that does not have a speed reduction.
According to a post on the Village of Union City Facebook page, the State largely bases speed studies on the current speed of the traffic and finding the 85th percentile speed. As it is a posted 55 mph speed zone, it is not surprising that most traffic is traveling at that speed.
The Village received support from Michigan House Representative Sarah Lightner, Calhoun County Sheriff Steve Hinkley and Burlington Township Officials in this latest speed reduction effort.

Sounds like the state wants to reduce the population in that area. Lives and safety are not a high priority. A stop light would be a quick fix but I am sure our Governor is spending all the money on fixing the roads like she campaigned on. NOT!
