UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – A large scale sidewalk rehabilitation program is underway in the Village of Union City which will involve work over the next several years.
The Union City Village Council approved the program during their meeting on April 8. According to a post on the village’s Facebook page, the goal is to make major improvements in the Village walkways over the next few years in order to make pedestrian travel safe, enjoyable and accessible to all.
Village crews started this week by replacing a section on Charlotte Street.
As time permits, Village officials say crews will continue replacing sections of sidewalk around Union City that are considered to be in critically poor shape by an independent review. There will be an initial focus on higher trafficked areas near the downtown and the schools.
The Village Council also discussed replacing a retaining wall and sidewalk on Park Street near High Street which is in bad shape. They are awaiting a contractor estimate.
It’s hoped the pedestrian bridge grant recently awarded can be tied into the extensive sidewalk improvements.
While the Village can not take specific requests for sidewalk repairs, they do offer a 50-50 cost split program for residents that optionally request to have their sidewalk done. If you have questions about this program, call the Village office at (517) 741-8591.
