QUINCY, MI (WTVB) – The Quincy Village Council approved a request from Village Manager Eric Zuzga on Tuesday to raise utility rates on September 1st. Zuzga said in his report to the Council that the increase was needed due to the increased debt service on a pair of bonds, necessary upgrades to the system and an increase in costs. Additional increases are planned for 2019 and 2020.
Zuzga said in his report to the Council that he knows rate hikes are not popular but the increases are necessary to maintain and improve the system.
The Village Council also approved a five year contract extension with Republic Services. The village will take over billing for the service similar to what Coldwater does. Starting on November 1st, residents can come to the village office to start and stop service. The village will collect from the residents and then pay Republic starting in November. The total monthly residential cost would go up gradually from $12.95 in the first year to $19.15 in the fifth year of the contract.
In other business, the Council approved a request from Zuzga to use the Transfer Station property on Ridge Road for the development of a disc golf course pending regulatory approval and fundraising for the project. Zuzga expects the total cost to be less than $35,000 which would include the fence around the transfer station.
The Council also approved the issuance $530,000 in water revenue bonds that will be used for improvements in the water system.
