COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Michigan Legislature approved the state’s budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year on Friday, and school districts are starting to examine how they will be affected by the spending plan.
At Monday’s organizational meeting of the Coldwater Board of Education, Superintendent Paul Flynn noted that the new state budget allows for a $250 per pupil increase in school funding, continues the free universal student breakfast and lunch program, and provides for additional training for literacy coaches. Administrators will still have to examine the possible impact to programs for at-risk students and English language learners:
In other business, the Board approved the purchase and installation of new age-appropriate playground equipment for Max Larsen Elementary at a cost of just over $232,683. The current playground equipment was installed when the school originally opened in 2003 as a K-5 building; Larsen now serves Young Fives, kindergarten, and first grade students. Installation of the new equipment is expected to be finished by the time classes begin in August.
The Board also okayed a $15,030 quote from City Glass to replace the entrance doors at Lincoln Learning Center, as well as a $57,900 bid from Excell Paving Plus for the new bus loop at Jefferson Elementary.
