COLDWATER TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Township Board discussed a proposal from a three-person committee to help fund the Doctor Robert W. Browne Aquatic Center on Monday night but no formal action was taken.
The operation of the pool is in the red by over $300,000 per year. Coldwater Community Schools officials have been working with the city and others to find a way to keep the facility open.
Coldwater Township Superintendent Don Rogers said they want more information from the committee before they make a decision. The matter maybe placed on the Township Board agenda next month or a special meeting maybe called before then.
Contrary to what some people thought, no vote was scheduled Monday night as the matter was not on the published agenda.
The late Dr. Brown donated money for the construction of the aquatic center on Western Avenue. It is owned by the City of Coldwater, with operation and maintenance handled by the school district.
Board of Education President Dr. Ed Lake said earlier this summer board members have had conversations with city officials over expenses and ways to increase revenue. He said at that time discussions will continue with city and Coldwater Township officials about possible funding sources to maintain the operation.
Lake says there has been a concern over a lack of lifeguards, which has resulted in reduced hours at times. While the pool is used by the high school’s two swim teams and some classes, only about 50 individual memberships are currently in place.
In addition to losing money on the operating costs, the district has recently paid $112,000 to replace the boiler for the building.
Find the funding! There always seems a way to fund dog parks and other “pet projects.” Contact the Governor. She always seems to get money from the Feds when she needs it. Except for disaster relief.
Why was it even discussed if it wasn’t on the agenda?
