STEUBEN COUNTY, IN (WTVB) – It was a bad Labor Day on Steuben County roads as one person was killed and four others were injured in a pair of crashes that took place within two-and-a-half hours of one another.
The fatal crash which took place at about 4:00 p.m. involved two vehicles in the area of County Roads 100 South and 1000 West.
Chief Deputy Michael Meeks says the initial crash scene investigation indicated that a 2023 Polaris Ranger UTV driven by 73-year-old Denny K. Northup of LaGrange, Indiana collided with a 2021 Chevy Equinox driven by 59-year-old Mary A. Ridenour of Angola, Indiana.
Northup and his 71-year-old wife Carol were ejected from their vehicle. Both Northups were flown from the scene by the Samaritan and MedFlight helicopters in critical condition to a Fort Wayne area hospital. Ridenour was treated at the scene for minor injuries by Steuben County EMS.
Denny Northup suffered a broken leg while Carol Northup suffered an apparent head injury. She later died at the hospital. The crash remains under investigation.
The second injury crash happened at about 1:30 p.m. on Monday afternoon in the area of County Roads 600 East and 400 North. An initial crash scene investigation indicated that a 2024 Subaru driven by 21-year-old Daniel M. Demello of Kalamazoo was driving at a high rate of speed when he crested a small hill in the road and lost control.
The Subaru then went off the road and into a ditch which caused the vehicle to overturn several times.
Demello and his 17-year-old passenger Caroline M. Demello of Kalamazoo complained of injuries and were transported to a Fort Wayne area hospital by Steuben County EMS for treatment.
