COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Township Michigan Medical Marijuana Act Committee is scheduled to hold another information gathering session Tuesday night at the Coldwater Township Hall, as the debate over medical marijuana heats up in Branch County.
The meeting is open to anyone, not just township residents,
Opponents to a proposed medical marijuana facility point out that medical marijuana is federally illegal and they do not want marijuana companies in the community. They made their side of the argument known in a full page ad taken out in last week’s Shoppers Guide. In their ad, the opponent said communities that have allowed medical marijuana have seen the supply outstripping the demand, resulting in unknown amounts of marijuana becoming available outside the medical marijuana structure, thus creating a black market.
There are also fears the product alone will invite theft and a criminal element since it’s a cash business.
Herbal Advantage and other backers of medical marijuana point out medical marijuana can generate a large amount of income.
The State of Michigan must have its licensing process in place by December. No one will be able to apply for a license until that time. Township Supervisor Don Rogers said in a recent letter that any decision by the township board would be extremly pre-mature at this time.
