COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Following a recommendation from the Coldwater Planning Commission, the Coldwater City Council voted 7-2 on Monday to introduce an ordinance that will eliminate marijuana grow establishments from the special land use approval process for property zoned industrial within the city.
Council members Emily Rissman and John Petzko cast the no votes. The second reading and final adoption is scheduled for October 28.
There have been discussions about this step being taken over the last two years.
Grower and excess grower licenses have been permitted in D-2 Heavy Industrial zoned areas with special land use approval.
Special land use approval is also needed for microbusinesses to operate in areas zoned C-4 General Business.
There have not been any applications for a microbusiness.
Four special land use requests have been approved since May of 2021 but only Craft Leaf LLC at 211 West Garfield has been licensed by the State of Michigan and the City of Coldwater. Craft Leaf would not be affected by the ordinance but they would not be able to expand.
