JACKSON TOWNSHIP, IN (WTVB) – An Ohio man was killed and a Angola woman was injured on Saturday night in a head-on crash involving a SUV and a pickup truck in Steuben County.
The Steuben County Sheriff’s Department said in a press release that the crash happened just after 6:40 p.m. on U.S. 20 between County Roads 800 West and 900 West.
The Salem Township Fire Department put out a fire which had broken out in one of the vehicles. Both vehicles sustained heavy front-end damage.
The driver of the SUV, 91-year-old Lester Merkle of Ohio City, Ohio was pronounced dead at the scene.
The preliminary investigation indicated Merkle’s vehicle drifted left of the center line and into the path of the pickup truck which was driven by 65-year-old Lorene Fuentes of Angola.
Fuentes sustained lower leg, arm, and possible internal injures and was taken to Cameron Hospital in Angola by Steuben County EMS in serious condition. She was later flown to an unnamed Fort Wayne area hospital by the Samaritan helicopter for treatment.
The crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the Steuben County Fatal Alcohol Crash Team. Assisting the Sheriff’s Office at the scene were the Indiana State Police, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division, Angola Police, Steuben County EMS, the Steuben County Coroner’s Office, and the Salem Township Fire Department.
