Cardinals, Vikings advance to Volleyball Regional Finals

EAST LANSING, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Cardinals and Bronson Vikings won their respective Regional Semifinal matches Tuesday night as the MHSAA Volleyball Tournament entered its second week.

In Division 1 at East Lansing, Coldwater survived a slow start to defeat Holt 14-25, 25-19, 25-15, 25-23. Team stats (leaders in bold):

• Mya Porter: 12 kills, 3 blocks, 3 aces, 13 digs
• Ava Longstreet: 11 kills, 4 blocks, 8 digs
• Marie Powers: 4 kills, 4 blocks, 3 aces
• Elli Foley: 4 kills, 4 aces, 7 digs, 17 assists
•  Aubrey Gebbink: 3 kills, 5 digs
• Brooklyn Closson: 1 kill, 4 digs, 10 assists
• Maren DeBeau: 13 digs, 5 assists

Coldwater will take a 26-11-3 record into their Regional Final showdown against Fenton Thursday night at 7 p.m. The Tigers, an Honorable Mention in the final Michigan Interscholastic Volleyball Coaches Association poll of the season, improved to 34-4 by eliminating DeWitt 25-12, 25-10, 25-20.

In Division 3 at Bridgman, Bronson advanced to the Regional Final by sweeping Watervliet 25-16, 25-14, 25-23.

Payton Smith led the Vikings in kills with 22. Aubree Calloway had 12 kills and six digs. Aleah Brackett recorded 26 assists and 10 digs. Ciara Blankenship had 11 digs.

Next up for the eighth-ranked Vikings: a rematch against Kalamazoo Christian, the team that knocked them out of last year’s tournament. The third-ranked Comets defeated Bangor in straight sets, 25-5, 25-8, 25-10. Thursday’s Regional Final begins at 6 p.m.
