COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A Sherwood man has been formally charged with three felony counts of being in aggravated possession of child sexually abusive materials and a felony count of using a computer to commit a crime.
65-year-old Jerry Lee Surber was arraigned on Monday in Branch County District Court.
According to Branch County court documents, Surber was arrested following a Michigan State Police investigation which started last June after a special detective got a tip from the Amazon Photo platform for potential child sexually abusive materials.
State Police were able to get an IP address. They then executed a search warrant at Surber’s home where multiple devices were seized and analyzed by the MSP computer crimes unit.
According to a probable cause affidavit, analysts observed numerous files of child sexually abuse materials. One device had 14 images and 137 videos of this type of activity.
The suspect told the State Police people would send him stuff but he was not able to delete the items.
A personal recognizance bond of $25,000 was set. Not guilty pleas were entered on Surber’s behalf. A probable cause hearing was set for February 13 with a preliminary exam scheduled for February 20.
