COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Branch County Administrator Frank Walsh said during Tuesday’s Board of Commissioners meeting that the potential agreement with Macomb County to house up to 100 inmates from that county in the Branch County Jail is being reviewed by Branch County’s legal counsel.
Walsh said the agreement will be brought back to the Board for their final approval.
Sheriff Fred Blankenship announced during the April 11 Board of Commissioners meeting that an agreement was reached with Macomb County as construction work is being performed at the Macomb County Jail over the next couple of years.
Blankenship said Macomb County will be charged $40 a day for every inmate. He estimated they will generate $1-point-4 million during the first year and nearly $3 million during the time the Macomb County inmates will be housed in Branch County.
The Branch County Jail has a listed capacity of 220 inmates but the jail population has been far below that in recent months.
