FORT WAYNE, IN (WTVB) – An Angola man was sentenced to four years in jail after causing two wrecks before taking off in a foot chase that resulted in an officer with two torn quadriceps.
42-year-old Zachariah Brookes Gruber was sentenced to four years in jail in connection with the charges of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, failure to remain at the scene of an accident with bodily injury, leaving the scene of an accident, and reckless driving in Fort Wayne in September 2023.
Gruber was charged after he collided with a pickup truck, fled, and then crashed into an SUV while running a red light. It was said in court documents that Gruber then fled on foot, later getting caught by police based on his description.
After talking with police initially, Gruber took off on foot, leading an officer on a chase, where the officer suffered two bilateral tendon tears to his quadriceps in both legs, causing him to not be able to follow, according to court documents.
Gruber also received a four-day jail credit for his time in jail during the trial of the case.
