Dorothy Eileen (Strang) Rogers died Sunday, December 27 at Maple Lawn Medical Care Facility in Coldwater.
She was born March 23,1918 the first child of Lula (Thompson) and Irvin Strang on a farm in Quincy Township. After graduation in 1936 from Quincy High School she married Junior Rogers. Together they had two sons, Lawrence and James, and eventually settled on a portion of her family’s farm to raise their family.
Dorothy was a great farm wife and learned to drive a tractor at a young age. Those skills served her well as she drove her car until she was 101 years old and always reminded her family that she never even had a ticket. She was an excellent cook and her pies were legendary.
After being widowed in 1996 Dorothy moved to Coldwater and resided independently at Burns Park Senior Apartments for 11 years. She was an avid game and card player and could be found at Burnside Senior Center several times a week playing her favorite card game euchre. She also loved to dance and attended the Friday night dances at Burnside faithfully. In fact both her 100th and 101st birthdays were celebrated with friends and family on the dance floor.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, husband Junior, son James, and three brothers. She is survived by her son Larry, daughter-in-law Judy, daughter-in-law Connie, and sister, Vivian (Strang) Hutchins. She was blessed with 5 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews who survive her as well. As she approached her 100th birthday she told family that rather than a traditional funeral she wanted to have a party while she was still alive. Per her wishes an open house was held in April 2018 to celebrate a life well lived.
Cremation has taken place and a private graveside family service will be held later in 2021.
Donations in Dorothy’s memory are suggested to Burnside Senior Center activities fund, Maple Lawn Medical Care Facility Activities Fund, or Quincy Public Library.
Arrangements are entrusted to the Eagle Funeral Home-George White Chapel in Quincy.
