COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – After what was called a minor overcharging error was discovered on Branch County’s summer tax bills, taxpayers will get a credit when the winter tax bills are sent out.
Branch County Administrator Frank Walsh says the county’s property tax rate request submitted to the State of Michigan was not correct and he has apologized for the error.
He told the Branch County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday he was contacted last Friday by Coldwater Township Supervisor Don Rogers about the mistake.
Branch County’s contracted Equalization Director Lyndsey Shembarger said the mistake was caught at a bad time.
She added everyone involved felt that the winter tax credit was the best solution.
Shembarger told Commissioner Tim Stoll the mistake involved a millage rate.
The difference from the incorrect amount to the correct amount is 0.0193 mills. For example, a property that has a taxable value of $200,000 the “overpayment” amount is $3.86.
For all of Branch County, the overcollection amount is estimated at just under $43,000.
