WASHINGTON DC, (WTVB) – Michigan 5th District Congressman Tim Walberg supports the idea of eliminating the U.S. Department of Education, believing it would improve education by returning control to states and local communities.
Walberg says he views the Department’s creation in 1979 as a mistake and is “delighted” by President Trump’s plan to dismantle it.
Walberg, chairman of the House Education and Workforce Committee, argues that the Department has become an ineffective bureaucracy with a negative impact on student performance.
He told Newsmax turning education over to the states would require checks and balances.
Walberg emphasizes the importance of returning control over education to parents, local communities, and states. He believes that local stakeholders are best positioned to understand and address the unique needs of their students.
While Walberg supports eliminating the Department, he acknowledges that it would require congressional approval. He also recognizes the need to ensure that any changes do not disrupt existing funding for educational programs, particularly those related to students with disabilities.
