BRONSON, MI (WTVB) – A vehicle the Bronson Fire Department received from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources this summer helped them Saturday night when a person was struck in the head by a tree while they were cutting wood.
Bronson Fire Chief Scott Wilber says they were called to a wooded area northeast of the intersection of Kosmerick and Bawden Roads at around 8:30 p.m..
The 2011 Ford F-250 crew cab four-wheel drive truck that the fire department got from the D.N.R. was used to reach the patient, who was about a third of a mile from the road.
The truck was then used to take the patient back to the road where a Lifecare Ambulance was waiting.
It was decided to take the patient to Sturgis Hospital instead of asking for a medical helicopter.
Firefighters were on the scene for about a half hour.
The truck was provided under a federal surplus equipment program and was converted by the fire department for use as a command vehicle and for responding to off road emergencies.
The Bronson Fire Department says they have received around $250,000 in grant funding and equipment during the last two years.
