COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – If you see a large presence of emergency vehicles traveling on US-12 and in the Wal Mart parking lot this evening don’t be alarmed, tonight is what has become an annual tradition in Branch County when children get to participate in the “Shop with a Hero” event.
The Branch County Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence organizes the event now in it’s 12th year, for the families they serve which involves members of various Branch County police, fire and emergency departments.
Every first responder is paired with a child to help them shop for Christmas.
Each youngster is given a gift card to use. They and their First Responder then shop for their family, the Marine Corp Toys of Tots campaign and themselves.
Gift wrapping is provided by Walmart staff and staff from the various agencies.
Funds for the event are donated by local citizens and from the proceeds of an annual golf outing held each summer by the Lakeland Correctional Facility Employees Club which is one of the sponsors for Shop with a Hero along with Wal Mart.
