COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Michigan is one of only nine states receiving a “Danger” rating in the 2026 Roadmap to Safety report from Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, which highlights weaknesses in the state’s traffic laws.
The group notes Michigan has lost more than 10,000 lives on its roads over the past decade, with crashes and fatalities continuing to rise.
While Michigan has some strong laws, the repeal of the universal motorcycle helmet law in 2012 is cited as a major setback.
Advocates are urging lawmakers to adopt additional measures such as rear seat belt requirements, stronger teen driving rules, red-light cameras, and automated speed enforcement.
The state’s new “SAFER by 2030” initiative aims to cut traffic deaths by 30-percent, but experts say more legislative action is still needed.
