COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A divided Coldwater Planning Commission turned down a special land use permit from Mashal Ali Abdo on Monday night to operate a small tire repair shop in a vacant space at 36 East Chicago.
Abdo said during last month’s Planning Commission meeting the business would provide in-and-out service and no vehicles would be kept overnight. He added they have a similar business in Dearborn.
But there were issues with the number of parking spaces and a 72 foot long easement along the southern property line that only allowed for 15 feet of maneuvering instead of the required 22 feet.
Other concerns included the visibility in the southbound turn from U.S. 12 to South Hudson. Commission member Mike Beckwith said that problem will never go away.
An approval of the special land use permit included a condition for a pedestrian barrier at the corner.
With only five members present, the Planning Commission turned down the request on a 3-to-2 vote.
The petitioner can still make a request to the Zoning Board of Appeals.
In other business, the Planning Commission decided to keep Aaron Garn as Chair for the next year while Chris Stevens will remain as Vice Chair.
