COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – We are learning more about an attack this past weekend at Insight Hospital & Medical Center Coldwater.
Branch County Prosecutor Zach Stempien has formally charged a 38-year-old man following a violent chain of events on Sunday at Insight Hospital & Medical Center, where a voluntary psychiatric patient allegedly attacked staff and fellow patients.
According to the Branch County Prosecutor’s Office, the unidentified suspect escaped a secured unit around 6:00 p.m., using a broom and a metal pipe to assault a security officer and a registered nurse. The rampage ended when the suspect jumped from a third-floor window, falling 20 feet and sustaining significant leg injuries before being apprehended by Coldwater Police while crawling through the snow.
The suspect is currently held at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne for treatment while awaiting formal arraignment on multiple felony counts. Under recent Michigan legislation designed to protect medical personnel, the defendant faces enhanced penalties that double standard fines and carry up to four years in prison for assaults involving dangerous weapons.
Hospital officials along with law enforcement continue to review safety protocols following the security breach and subsequent escape.
