UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – It was a happy Snocoming for the Union City Chargers boys basketball team on Friday night as they defeated the Quincy Orioles 46-31 in a Big 8 Conference game at McNett Fieldhouse.
Both teams have had grueling schedules over the last two weeks. They were each playing their seventh game in 14 days on Friday night.
Union City led throughout the night. They were ahead 11-8 after the first quarter and then turned up the defensive intensity in the second quarter as they used a 14-3 stanza to grab a 25-11 lead at the half.
The Chargers led by as many as 16 points in the third quarter and were ahead 37-26 entering the final eight minutes.
Quincy could get no closer than nine points in the fourth quarter. Along with a suffocating defense, the Chargers owned a 32-29 edge in rebounds.
Micah Payne led the Chargers with a game-high 15 points. Nolan Chard added 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Liam Payne had eight points and seven rebounds. Braxton Miller had eight rebounds.
Braylon Estlow led Quincy with nine points while Alex Dunn had eight points, 11 rebounds and two blocked shots.
Union City improved to 6-14 overall. Quincy dropped to 10-9. Both teams are 5-7 in the Big 8 Conference.
Quincy won the J.V. game over Union City 57-49.
