COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A Union City man who was arrested following a violent domestic dispute in March which led to a Michigan State Police trooper hurting his knee was sentenced Monday in Branch County Circuit Court.
32-year-old Jeremiah Johnson was given a one year jail sentence for assaulting, restricting and obstructing a police officer and a concurrent sentence of 93 days for domestic violence after he entered no contest pleas to the two charges.
A second count of assaulting a police officer as well as a sentencing enhancement for being a third time habitual offender were dismissed in exchange for the pleas. Johnson was also credited with 183 days already served.
Johnson was accused by authorities of beating his wife before police arrived. State Police Trooper Michael Thyng injured his knee as he and a Union City police officer were trying to place Johnson under arrest.
