UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – Concord has already locked up the Big 8 Conference girls basketball title for 2025-2026 but the Union City Chargers are still trying to finish second in the final standings.
The Chargers got a big win in their final game of the regular season at McNett Fieldhouse on Friday night as they defeated Branch County rival Quincy in an intense battle 61-54.
Union City led 10-6 after the first quarter and 24-20 at the half. They scored the final five points of the third quarter to take a 39-34 advantage into the final stanza.
Quincy battled back to a 47-47 tie but back-to-back buckets by Nala Payne and a three pointer by Calli Wilkinson gave Union City a 54-47 lead with less than three minutes to play. The Orioles tried to mount a late comeback but the Chargers used accurate foul shooting to maintain their edge.
Payne led Union City with 17 points while Wilkinson and Ellie Williams both scored 11 points.
Kendyl Musielwicz hit all eight of her foul shots and led Quincy with 18 points. Josi Parker added 14 points, all of them coming in the second half, while Anistin Smullen scored 11 points.
Quincy made hay at the foul line as they were 21-of-24 from the stripe while Union City was 12-of-20.
The Chargers improved to 15-5 overall and 9-3 in the Big 8. They were tied with Stockbridge for second entering Friday’s game. The Orioles are now 10-9 overall and 7-5 in the conference.
Union City also won the J.V. game 40-27.
