UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – Quincy’s defense held Union City to just 99 yards of total offense as the Orioles edged the Chargers 9-8 in a Branch County rivalry contest on Friday night. The Orioles took a 2-0 lead in the second quarter on an attempted Union City punt as a high snap from center went over the Union City punter’s head and out of the end zone for a safety. Quincy went up 9-0 in the fourth quarter on a 23 yard touchdown pass from Evan Henning to Caleb McCavit. As it turned out, Trey Watson’s extra point proved to be the difference in the final score. Gavin Hooker’s 60 yard punt return for a touchdown with 48 seconds left gave the Chargers life. The two point conversion was good. Trailing by one point, Union City recovered the ensuing onside kick but were penalized for being offside. They tried the onside kick again but this time, the Orioles recovered and ran out the clock. Larson Kever led the Chargers with 61 yards rushing while Nick Delisle had 10 tackles. Sebastian Gillete led the Orioles with 52 yards on the ground while McCavit had six tackles. The Orioles are now 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the Big 8 while the Chargers drop to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
And Springport jumped out to a 26-0 lead in the first quarter as they defeated the Bronson Vikings 45-0. The Vikings are now 0-3.
