COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Community School Board of Education approved a request on Monday night to purchase new vape sensors for Coldwater High School and Legg Middle School.
The amount of money the district will pay for the sensors from the Monarch Company is not exceed $14,627. The funds will come from a 2023 settlement agreement of nearly $47,000 in a lawsuit filed against Juul Labs, Incorporated and other vaping product defendants.
The suit filed in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California alleged vaping was harming students. A U.S. District Judge approved a $225 million settlement which alleges Juul deceptively marketed the vaping product and that they marketed their products to children.
School districts that accepted the settlement agreement in turn released claims against Juul and Juul-related products, thus settling the lawsuit.
Coldwater was among 120 school districts in the State of Michigan who joined the lawsuit.
Superintendent Paul Flynn told the School Board on Monday they are buying 13 sensors in this latest order. They will be located in the bathrooms and locker rooms at the high school and middle school.
One sensor being replaced was vandalized by a student who later had to pay restitution.
