Virgil Lee Bowerman, 93, of Union City passed away peacefully at home Wednesday, March 18, 2026, surrounded by family, under hospice care.
A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, March 22, 2026, at Lighthouse Funeral & Cremation, 1276 Tate Trail, Union City, MI with Pastor Marty Burdick officiating. A private interment be at Lakeview Cemetery in Quincy.
Visitation will be held for 2 hours just prior to the service, beginning at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, also at the Lighthouse in Union City.
Virgil was born January 6, 1933 to Everett and Ila (McGinnis-O’Dell) Bowerman in Quincy, Michigan. He graduated from Quincy High School with the Class of 1951.
Virgil proudly served in the United States Army, stationed in England, where he ran a boiler system and helped build an airstrip. Upon his return to civilian life, he settled down in the Union City area to be a full-time farmer.
December 30, 1981, Virgil married Hazel (Stuck) Cook-Haughey in Florida. She preceded him in death March 15, 2022.
Virgil was raised in Quincy and was active in the FFA and 4-H. He was a hardworking man that always put family first. Kind, generous, loving, good natured, and a real jokester are just a few of the ways his family will remember him. He always loved his sweet treats, including cherry pie and ice cream.
He was a man of faith and had been a member of the Union City Wesleyan Church for many years, along with his wife. He enjoyed traveling, farming, and Farmall tractors. No other brand of tractor would do.
Virgil is survived by his children, William (Lisa) Bowerman of Quincy and Sally Davis of Union City; his stepchildren, Linda (Jeff) Carter of Battle Creek, Raymond E. (MaryAnn) Cook, Jr. of Quincy, Deborah Camp of Fort Wayne, IN, David A. Cook of Sherwood, Jerry L. (Amy) Cook of IL, Robert W. Cook of Union City, and Sheryl L. Harrington of Angola, IN; his daughter-in-law, Dell Cook of Union City; his many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Hazel, Virgil was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Edwin Bowerman; his infant sister, Ruth Bowerman; his granddaughters Melissa Durbin and Jessica Covey; his stepson, Willaim G. Cook; and daughter-in-law, Sherry Cook.
