COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Michigan Public Service Commission has approved a $226 million rate increase for Consumers Energy, set to take effect on May 1st.
While the utility originally requested a $326 million hike, the approved amount will still result in higher monthly costs for millions of residents.
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel criticized the decision, calling for a legislative overhaul to break what she described as a “never-ending cycle” of utility rate hikes passed on to the public.
For customers in Branch County, this decision means a direct hit to the monthly budget starting this spring. A typical household using 500 kilowatt-hours of electricity per month will see their bill rise by approximately $6.46. Local residents should prepare for these adjusted rates to appear on their May billing cycles as Consumers begins implementing the new price structure across their statewide service area.
