BLACKMON TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – Coldwater’s Interstate 8 baseball games Tuesday at Jackson Northwest were as close as they get. The Mounties won the opener 2-1, while the Cardinals took the nightcap 4-3.
The first game saw Northwest break a scoreless tie with a run in the sixth off starter Owen Tappenden. His RBI double in the top of the seventh tied the game at 1-1, but the Mounties got the game winner in the bottom of the frame on a two-out single off reliever Dayton Ennis. Tappenden allowed one run on four hits with two walks and 13 strikeouts in his six-inning start.
In the second game, the Cardinals had to hold off the Mounties late after jumping out to an early 3-0 lead. Tappenden, Kayden Roby, Rylan Edwards, and Logan Turner each had two hits, with Roby driving in two runs. Ennis got the win in relief of starter Finn Hanson.
Coldwater is now 5-10 overall and 3-3 in the Interstate 8. They will host Delton Kellogg on Thursday, with coverage on WTVB joining the doubleheader in progress at around 5:20 p.m.
BRONSON, MI – Bronson dropped both ends of a Big 8 twinbill against Springport, 4-2 in eight innings and 9-5.
The Vikings lost the opener despite out-hitting the Spartans 10-6. Springport snapped a 2-2 tie in the eighth with a pair of runs off a bases-loaded walk and a passed ball. Joe Fair singled, doubled, and drove in a run.
Springport went ahead for good in the nightcap with four runs in the fourth to break a 5-5 stalemate. Fair was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, while Connor McClelland drove in two runs. Max Byler and Ben Stevens each went 2-for-3.
Bronson fell to 9-4 overall and 4-4 in the Big 8. They will host Jackson Lumen Christi on Thursday.
QUINCY, MI – Quincy and Union City split their Big 8 doubleheader. The host Orioles won the opener 9-2, while the Chargers took the nightcap 3-1.
In the first game for Quincy, JJ Wright was 3-for-4 with a double, and Bryson Estlow went 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs. Cobee Stevens earned the victory. Carson Liles and Mitchell Graham each had two hits for Union City.
All the offense in the second game came in the first two innings, as the Orioles were held to singles from Wright and Seth VanStelle. Cobee Stevens brought home their only run on a bases-loaded walk in the first. The Chargers were held to four hits, but scored two in the first and added an insurance run in the second; Brock Watson, Nolan Chard, and Dalton Hawk drove in the runs. Cullen Decker, the third pitcher used, picked up the win.
Quincy is now 8-6-1 overall and 3-5 in the Big 8. They are idle until Saturday’s Oriole Classic tournament. Union City is 7-7 overall, 4-4 in the Big 8, and will host Climax-Scotts on Friday.
