UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – Michigan residents and business owners affected by the deadly March 6, 2026, tornado outbreak have until June 29, 2026, to apply for low-interest physical damage disaster loans through the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).
Following an administrative disaster declaration by Governor Gretchen Whitmer, these federal loans are available to help repair or replace disaster-damaged real estate, machinery, and personal property in primary counties like Branch, Cass, and St. Joseph, as well as several neighboring counties.
Homeowners may qualify for up to $500,000 for primary residence repairs, while businesses and private nonprofits can apply for up to $2 million to cover physical losses.
SBA Public Affairs Specialist Brian Beard says the loans are a way to deal with slow response or under payment from insurance companies or simply cover the cost of a deductible
Borrowers will have zero interest accrued and no payments due for the first year of the loan.
For those suffering financial hardships rather than physical damage, the deadline for Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDL) is further out, on January 28, 2027. These funds are intended to cover ongoing operating expenses such as payroll and rent that cannot be met due to the impact of the storms. Impacted individuals can apply online through the MySBA Loan Portal or seek in-person assistance at a Disaster Loan Outreach Center, such as the Branch District Library in Union City, which remains staffed through Thursday of this week.
