FRUITPORT TOWNSHIP, (WTVB) – A chaotic scene at a post-prom party in Fruitport Township left six people injured late Saturday night when gunfire erupted and fleeing attendees were struck by vehicles. Fruitport Township Police were initially dispatched to the VFW Hall on Airline Highway around 11:50 p.m. for a report of a pedestrian hit by a car, but they quickly discovered a shooting had also taken place in the parking lot.
Witnesses described a scene of pure terror, with dozens of teenagers in formal attire “running for their lives” as gunshots rang out through the neighborhood.
Local investigators confirmed that four people suffered gunshot wounds, all of whom were treated for non-life-threatening injuries at a nearby hospital. In the ensuing panic to escape the area, two additional people were struck by cars on the roadway.
While one of the individuals hit by a vehicle is currently in critical condition, the other’s injuries were not considered life-threatening. One neighbor living next to the VFW post reported hearing between 30 and 40 shots just before midnight, followed by the sight of frantic teenagers scrambling into her yard and driveway to find safety.
As of Monday morning, no suspects have been taken into custody, and authorities have not released any information regarding possible arrests. Preliminary findings suggest that multiple individuals discharged firearms during the event, which was attended by an estimated 150 to 200 people.
While the party followed a high school prom, Muskegon Public Schools clarified that the gathering was not a school-sponsored event. The Fruitport Township Police Department continues to review video evidence and asks anyone with information to contact investigators at 231-865-8477.
