BATTLE CREEK, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Cardinal baseball team extended its winning streak to five games after sweeping a doubleheader at Pennfield Thursday, 1-0 and 6-5.
The first game was originally suspended on April 21st after the first inning due to storms. There was no score at that point, and once play resumed, the game would remain scoreless until the seventh, when Rylan Edwards came home on an errant throw by the catcher after Edwards had stolen third. Owen Tappenden threw a complete game no-hitter with four walks and 13 strikeouts; he also had the only two Cardinal hits off Panther starter Calvin Paesens.
Coldwater was down 5-1 in the second game until Tappenden hit a three-run home run in the fifth, his sixteenth of the season. In the sixth, Royale Fleming’s RBI double brought home Luke Stout to tie the game; Fleming scored the go-ahead run on Dayton Ennis’s RBI single. Ennis was 3-for-4 at the plate, and he picked up the pitching victory in relief of Edwards.
The Cardinals improved to 14-13 overall and finished Interstate 8 play at 8-4. They return to action Wednesday at East Lansing.
