COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – 39-year-old Mason Holbrook of Coldwater, faces felony and misdemeanor charges after allegedly leading law enforcement on a 23-mile pursuit from Branch County into Indiana on April 27, 2026.
According to a felony complaint filed in 3-A District Court, Holbrook was driving a black sports car with an unregistered license plate that returned “no record” when checked by a Branch County Sheriff’s deputy.
The pursuit began near Jonesville Road and Gorbell Road when the deputy attempted a traffic stop. Holbrook allegedly made a U-turn, prompting the deputy to activate emergency lights and siren. He then continued southbound on Fiske Road and through a series of roads, reaching speeds of 70-90 mph and exceeding 100 mph on at least three occasions, while passing other vehicles. The chase crossed into Indiana on I-69 before an Indiana trooper deployed stop sticks, disabling the vehicle.
After the car stopped, Holbrook fled on foot but was quickly apprehended. He reportedly told deputies he ran because he did not want to go to jail and was already out on bond in Branch County Circuit Court from a prior case in which he had also fled police.
He admitted the license plate belonged to a previous Tahoe and that he was driving the unregistered black sports car. Multiple Branch County deputies, including Sgt. Paulino Hernandez, participated in the pursuit with marked vehicles and activated lights and sirens.
He is charged with fourth degree fleeing a police officer (a felony punishable by up to two years in prison and a $500 fine, with a one-year license suspension) and operating an unregistered vehicle (a misdemeanor).
Bond was set at $100,000 for public safety, he will be back in court for a probable cause hearing on May 28, before District Judge Brent R. Weigle.
