LANSING, MI WTVB) – Without releasing where they lived, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services said Monday that two Michigan resident who contracted cyclosporiasis have died.
The state says the total number of reported cases is up to 11, 234 after surpassing 10,000 on Wednesday with 193 hospitalizations. They say both people who died had “significant underlying health conditions that may have been impacted by cyclosporiasis and dehydration.” No additional details were being released.
One of the biggest risks surrounding cyclosporiasis is dehydration, as the infection causes frequent watery, “explosive” diarrhea, fatigue, and loss of appetite. Though the infection is not usually deadly, health officials say people with certain preexisting conditions or antibiotic allergies can struggle to recover.
On the state’s Infectious Disease Outbreak dashboard webpage, they say “while the investigation is ongoing, available information indicates that lettuce or salad greens may be a potential source of this outbreak. However, other food items cannot be completely ruled out. No specific type of produce, grower, or supplier has been identified as the source.”
The dashboard says as of last Thursday, July 30, there have been 15 reported cases in Branch County, with 297 in Calhoun County, 57 in Hillsdale County, and 34 in St. Joseph County.
Wayne County is the hardest hit with 1,379 reported cases, with 1,043 in Oakland County.
