BRONSON, MI (WTVB) – The Bronson City Council adopted a new rental housing ordinance for the city Monday night which will go into effect September 1, 2018.
The action came after a public hearing was held in which one person showed up to ask questions.
City Manager Brandon Mersman says there are a number of reasons why the ordinance was needed.
He says they are trying to protect and improve upon the aging housing stock that they have. In addition, the Bronson Fire Department has found safety issues in some rental houses over the last few months.
The ordinance calls for rental properties to be registered annually. Inspections would take place every two years. If the property is not in compliance, landlords would be given a list of items to be fixed and a second inspection at a higher cost will then be performed.
Mersman says he has gotten a mostly positive reaction from the few people who have given him feedback on the ordinance.
