ANGOLA, IN (WTVB) – The Angola Common Council moved one step closer to establishing a Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA) on Monday night, by passing Ordinance 1800-2026 on its second reading.
The proposed district is designed to boost foot traffic in the historic downtown square by allowing patrons to carry open alcoholic beverages within defend boundaries of the downtown area during set hours.
Proponents argue the move will align Angola with neighboring communities like Hamilton and Fremont, which have already successfully implemented similar refreshment zones to enhance their local tourism and nightlife.
During the session at Angola City Hall, council members addressed potential concerns regarding public safety and enforcement. While the ordinance sets strict rules for participating businesses and requires designated cups, city officials say that the proximity of the police department to the proposed district would help manage any security needs.
Following this second approval, the ordinance is expected to head to a third and final reading before it can be officially enacted and signed by the mayor.
