SCHOOLCRAFT, MI (WTVB) – The Bronson Vikings opened their run in this year’s MHSAA Softball Tournament with a 12-1 win in five innings at Schoolcraft in a Division 3 District first round game.
Bronson’s pitchers split duties on the circle; Madison Shaw went four innings and allowed a run on four hits with six strikeouts, while Ashlynn Harris threw a scoreless fifth and struck out three. Shaw helped her own cause at the plate by going 2-for-3 with two RBIs, Delanee Carpenter was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, and Hermosa Gonzalez hit a 2-run double.
Head coach Becky Gray said after the game, “We didn’t play our best tonight but at this stage of the game a win is a win and we will take it. We will look to polish up these next three days and hopefully get two wins on Saturday.”
The Vikings will face Centreville Saturday at 10 a.m. in the first Division 3 District Semifinal game at Schoolcraft. The winner will face either Union City or Constantine for a District championship later that afternoon.
Meanwhile, the stage is set for a possible Coldwater-Harper Creek rematch for a Division 2 District championship on Saturday. The Beavers shut out crosstown rival Pennfield 9-0 and will face Marshall Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in the second District Semifinal at Marshall’s Wise Field. The Cardinals will open up District play against Vicksburg in Saturday’s first game at Marshall.
COLON, MI – Quincy played at Colon for their final tournament tune-up and came from behind to beat the Magi 8-6.
The Orioles broke a 5-5 tie with three runs in the seventh. Five of Quincy’s six hits were for extra bases: doubles from Gracin Hemker, Gabi Norris, Josi Parker, and Taylor Lewis, and a triple from Mackenzie Sattison. Parker earned the win in relief of starter Lewis, allowing two hits and striking out seven in three innings.
Quincy improved to 14-19 and will take on Jonesville Saturday at 10 a.m. in the semifinals of the Division 3 Homer District. The winner will face either Hillsdale or Homer for the District title.
JONESVILLE, MI – Union City fell to 16-14 after dropping a pair of five-inning games at Jonesville, 11-1 and 4-0.
In the first game, the Chargers were held to singles from Lauren Tundevold, Hannah Schofield, and Temperance Sours. Madison Krummrey scored the only run on the RBI single from Sours.
Krummrey and Sours had the only hits for Union City in the second game.
The Chargers will take on Constantine Saturday at around 12 p.m. in the second Division 3 District Semifinal game at Schoolcraft.
