LANSING, MI (WTVB) – State Rep. Kathy Schmaltz is backing a plan to ease the burden rising fuel costs have placed on Michigan families, commuters, and small businesses.
Schmaltz, (R-Jackson) , recently co-sponsored a measure to suspend the state portion of Michigan’s gas tax to help lower prices at the pump. she said in a statement “As families continue stretching every dollar to cover groceries, housing, and everyday expenses, higher gas prices are making life even harder, People in our communities should not have to choose between filling up their tank and paying for other essentials. This plan would provide meaningful relief right away.”
House Bill 5966 would set the state gas tax to zero cents per gallon on gasoline, diesel, and alternative fuels.
Under the proposal, the suspension would take effect immediately after the bill is signed into law and would remain in place until either Nov. 1, 2026, or until the nationwide average gas price drops below $3.50 per gallon, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
Michigan drivers are currently paying 52.4 cents per gallon in state fuel taxes. For someone filling up a 15-gallon tank, this plan could save them nearly $8 each time they stop for gas.
Indiana governor Mike Braun has suspended both his states sales and excise tax saving Hoosiers nearly 60-cents per gallon and that has lowered prices in the Angola and other border towns to under $3.60 per gallon as of this morning.
House Bill 5966 has been referred to the House Appropriations Committee for consideration.
