UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – Extensive improvements will begin at Riverview and Heritage Cultural Parks in Union City the week of June 8, as construction officially starts on a major $850,000 transformation project.
Funded by a Michigan DNR SPARK Grant, the initiative will bring a wave of new features designed to maximize community enjoyment and accessibility.
Upgrades include ADA-compliant lighted walkways, a new drinking fountain, landscaping, enhanced signage, and improved river access for kayaking and tubing. Additionally, visitors can look forward to amphitheater seating enhancements and two accessible overlook deck structures extending over the St. Joseph River.
The final project design evolved from an original pedestrian bridge concept after initial construction costs significantly exceeded available grant funding.
By shifting focus, the Village successfully maximized the grant investment to deliver a broader range of park features and accessibility improvements.
To complete the work, the Village contracted with Michigan Bridge Company for construction, Fleis & Vandenbrink for engineering services, and Schley Construction for the permanent amphitheater seating.
Due to strict grant terms and permitting requirements, the work must take place during the 2026 season, requiring both parks to close temporarily during active construction ahead of the October 2026 completion deadline.
